• An Overview of End of Life Care for Registered Nurses
(Five Day Course)
The aim of this course is to provide an opportunity for registered nurses working in all care settings to consider the principles and philosophy of palliative care for people at the end of life.
There will be an emphasis on how the theories taught in the classroom can be linked to the reality of everyday practice. We are very keen to promote the importance of holistic nursing care can enhance comfort for people at the end of life.
This course has been developed to support the National End of Life Care Programme and it offers participants the opportunity to update their knowledge on key tools, including the Gold Standards Framework (GSF), the AMBER care bundle, Liverpool Care Pathway (LCP) and Preferred Priorities of Care (PPC), as well as facilitating reflection on communication skills and advance care planning.
The individual days for this course can be taken as 'stand alone' study days. Please contact the Education Centre for further details.

• University of Brighton Module End of Life: Principles of Care
20 credits (Diploma or Degree Level)
The focus of the module is to explore the fundamental principles underpinning the care and management of people who are dying. The module will consider the concepts and definitions of palliative care and the nature and relief of suffering from a physical; emotional; psychological; and spiritual perspective.
This will include the importance of effective assessment, pain and symptom management, nutrition, communication, comfort, complementary therapies, sexuality, law and ethics and grief and bereavement. It will also acknowledge the importance of caring for ourselves, and the significance of multi-professional working.
A sound theoretical underpinning will be provided regarding key issues/concepts, which affect practice, enabling students to develop knowledge and competence. The module will be taught by lecturers and clinicians.
This module can be studied in relation to the:
1. Diploma / BSc (Hons) Degree in Professional Practice
2. It can also be studied as a 'stand alone' module.

The Management of Syringe Drivers
This half day session provides an opportunity for registered nurses and doctors to consider the appropriate use of a syringe driver (McKinley) in palliative care.
There will be a focus on the implications for its use, advantages and possible disadvantages, drug compatibility and the practicalities of setting the driver up as well as monitoring the effect of its use.

• Hospice Visits for Health and Social Care Professionals
This is an introduction to St Barnabas House for health and social care professionals and an opportunity to see how the organisation functions as an inter-professional team.
There will be time for discussion with staff from the In Patient Unit, Day Hospice, Community Palliative Care Team and Education Centre. There will be a guided tour.

This course will provide an excellent opportunity for health and social care professionals (hospital, care home, hospice and the community) to gain a greater understanding of the care of people at the end of life.
Health and social care support workers play a crucial role in providing people with comfort and this course will help you to explore the different aspects of end of life care. The course will be facilitated at two Hospices, St Barnabas House (Worthing) and St Wilfrid's Hospice (Chichester).

• SAGE & THYME® Level 1 Communication Skills Training
The SAGE & THYME© level 1 half-day training course is a foundation level communication skills workshop developed by a multi-disciplinary team at the University of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust in response to the publication of NICE guidance for Supportive and Palliative Care for Adults with Cancer (2004).
It is designed to give staff the tools to carry out level 1 psychological assessment and support for distressed patients.

• Two Day: Advanced Communication Skills Training
The advanced communication skills training programme has been developed in response to National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) Supportive and Palliative Care Guidance and the Cancer Reform Strategy.
Previous courses have covered areas such as seeking informed consent, breaking bad news, dealing with collusion, handling conflict and communicating with colleagues.

Who should attend: The course is targeted at senior health care professionals, including doctors, nurses and allied health care professionals who are involved in cancer care delivery and members of the MDT.
• Hospital Link Nurses
A programme is facilitated at the hospice by the Palliative Care Clinical Nurse Specialists at Worthing Hospital to enable link nurses to update their palliative care knowledge.

• Symptoms, Solutions and Scenarios
This session will provide an introduction to the assessment of some of the common symptoms experienced by people at the end of life. This will include, pain, nausea and vomiting, respiratory secretions and terminal agitation.
There will be a focus on some of the key drugs prescribed to manage these symptoms. Scenarios will be used to link the theory taught to the reality of everyday clinical practice, including drug conversions.

• Six Steps to Success (Exciting New Initiative!)
Programme for Care Homes
This programme is based on the Six Steps programme produced by the National End of Life Programme (2010). The aim is to ensure that all residents in Care Homes receive high quality end of life care provided by a care home that encompasses the philosophy of palliative care.
The programme focuses very much on the reality of practice, valuing the importance of the nurse's role in delivering holistic end of life care. The course will be delivered predominantly as workshops in local Care Homes, but it also includes additional study days at the Hospice.

• Verification of Expected Death
This study day will provide an overview of how to verify an expected death. It will provide an introduction and overview of community policy specific to 'Verification of Expected Death' and consider the registered nurses role and the Coronerʼs perspective.
It will also consider related communication and legal and ethical issues, record keeping & documentation and bereavement support for relatives.

• Community Road Shows
We are pleased to be able to offer you and your colleagues a lunchtime or afternoon session on a palliative care subject of your choice in your community clinical setting.
This session would be facilitated by a doctor working in specialist palliative care, a lecturer and/or a palliative care nurse specialist. We would be happy to provide a session for different members of your team, for example, the receptionists and secretarial staff, the community nurses, General Practitioners or other allied health and social care professionals or a session for everyone together.
We are very keen to support you locally in caring for people (and their families) at the end of life. Please contact the Education Centre for more details.
