Worthing man, Mike Pappenheim (also known as “Lightnin’ Mike”), aged 54, has raised over £7,000 since 2012 for St Barnabas House hospice by busking on the streets with his saxophone in his free time. Mike works in London and lives in Worthing his wife, son (aged 20) and daughter (aged 18). He plays saxophone most weekends in Worthing town centre, and also plays regular jazz gigs at the Empress Bar in Littlehampton with co-musicians as “Lightnin’ Mike and Friends.”
Mike took up the saxophone in 2009 after his daughter asked for the instrument for Christmas, but she decided to instead take up the flute. He said: “practising on the streets saves my family from too much music! I had heard about St Barnabas House and wanted to support the fantastic work they do in the community. I’m really grateful to the many local people in Worthing who appreciate my music and give generously to my St Barnabas House collection bucket.”
Mary Bye, Community Fundraiser for St Barnabas House, said: “We are incredibly grateful for Mike’s support and efforts. His music is lovely to hear, and £7,000 is a fantastic achievement. This is the cost of a 24 hour stay in our In-patient Unit for 12 of our patients. Our thanks also go to the general public who have supported Mike with their generous donations and kind words.”
