Hugh Lowson’s column: Looking back at the events and achievements of 2016

Thursday 29 December 2016

Hugh Lowson CEO

I hope you all had a very Happy Christmas and didn’t eat too many mince pies and turkey!

As this is my last column before the start of the new year it seems like an ideal opportunity to look back at all of the exciting things that have taken place over the last 12 months.

We have continued to develop our new disease-specific services and we played a key role in the launch of echo, the new end of life care co-ordination hub for Coastal West Sussex.

Our biggest achievement this year though was being awarded with a rating of ‘Outstanding’ in our Care Quality Commission inspection in May. This was a tremendous achievement given that only 1% of the inspections across all Adult Social Care Services managed to achieve this rating.

Once again our Night to Remember midnight walk was a roaring success, raising over £126,000. Next year will be the tenth Night to Remember and I know our Events Team have lots of exciting things planned for this momentous occasion.

It has been an interesting year in Retail with our Durrington charity shop being refurbished, and our Ferring shop celebrating its 20th birthday.

We ended the year with the news that our Community Companions scheme has been awarded with an APS national quality standard in mentoring and befriending, a fantastic achievement.

Now though, it is time to start looking forward to 2017, and here at St Barnabas House we are always planning for the future.

I will continue to provide regular updates in my column, but in the meantime you can find out more about the ongoing development of our services here.

I would like to finish by wishing you all a Happy New Year!
