Top Gear-style challenge to raise funds for St Barnabas House

Old friends, Mark Tate, 42 from Worthing and Jason Moore, 47 from Brighton, are taking an old banger from Sussex to Monte Carlo to raise vital funds for St Barnabas House.

Mark, a Team Manager at Aviva, and Jason, who works as a Growth Marketer for Avalara, have decided to put their 20-year friendship to test and drive over 900 miles as part of the legendary banger rally, Monte Carlo or Bust, Champagne Charlie.

Setting off from Saint-Quentin in France on Thursday 18 July, the pair will travel though France, Switzerland and Italy before crossing the finish line in Monte Carlo on Sunday 21 July.

Mark said: “After a few beers in the local pub, we thought it would be a good idea! Sadly, Jason’s mother has had terminal cancer for several years and has benefited from attending the St Barnabas House Day Hospice. My father also received excellent respite care back in 1988, so it’s a cause close to both of our hearts.

“Thanks to everyone’s support, we’ve already raised £1,152 which is enough to cover the cost of five days of Day Hospice care for a patient like Jason’s mum.”

Jason said: “We’ve never attempted anything like this before and are relishing the challenge – especially as we have chosen to do it in a £350 Alfa Romeo, a car manufacturer not renowned for its reliability.

“We’re looking forward to seeing new places and making friends along the way, although we’ve just found out the air conditioning is broken and can’t be fixed, so it’s going to be a seriously hot journey!”

Mark and Jason have set up a website where you can read more about their challenge and show your support: www.sussextomontecarlo.co.uk
