Jo braves the shave for St Barnabas House

Thursday 25 July 2019

Hove resident, Jo Bowles, is celebrating after the final total for her hair-raising challenge reaches £3,321, more than double her initial target of £1,500.

The money is to be split equally between St Barnabas House and national charity, Breast Cancer Now.

Jo said, “For the first part of my challenge I decided to dye my hair pink for a month, before then shaving it all off in a hair-raising bid to raise some cash for my chosen charities.”

“I chose to have my head shaved on 2 May – it’s a very poignant date to me as it’s the day I lost my Dad to cancer in 1980.”

Jo will donate over £1,500 to St Barnabas House, a cause which she says is “close to my heart”. Her generous donation is enough to cover the cost of 24 hours of care by the Hospice at Home team, who look after patients in the comfort of their own home.

Jo said, “I used to volunteer at St Barnabas House when I lived in Worthing, helping to arrange fresh flowers for the patients and their families to enjoy. Spending time in the hospice, I have seen first-hand how wonderful the team are and how much local people benefit from their specialist care and support when they need it most.

“My other charity, Breast Cancer Now, is also very important to me as they are constantly trying to raise awareness to help beat breast cancer, a dreadful disease that has affected many of my friends and loved ones.”

Jo has this message to everyone who has helped her smash her fundraising target:
“Thank you to all my friends, family and special people for making this crazy fundraising idea worthwhile, there’s been such an amazing response and both charities are delighted with the donations. I’m over the moon with how much has been raised, albeit with very cold ears!

“Special thanks also to Emma from Hair & Co in Henfield who coloured my hair pink and to my friend Clare Jordan for shaving it all off.”
