Education Team launch new programme for 2019-20

For many of us, September signals the end of summer holidays and the start of a new academic year. Here at St Barnabas, it’s also the time our Education Team launch their programme of over 80 courses and study days which run throughout the year.

Not everyone knows we have an Education department at the hospice, delivering training for our own staff as well as health and social care professionals involved in palliative care.

The programme has been influenced by the people we care for and covers a range of topics from symptom management, spirituality and creative arts to advanced care planning. We are very proud to deliver the ‘End of Life: Principles of Care’ module for the University of Brighton and we recently held an annual Summer School for young adults, aged 16 to 19, who are interested in a career in health or social care.

Inviting people into the classroom to share their stories about living with their illness is an important part of our Education Programme. This year, we are facilitating a fascinating study day called ‘An Ice Cream at Midnight’ which will be led by patients and families in our care – focusing on what is important to them and the ‘little things’ which can make all the difference to an individual’s quality of life.

Our Education Team’s motto is ‘sharing knowledge and learning together’ which I think sums up the role of St Barnabas in sharing our expertise to reach more people in our local community.
