Jan Harper has run the St Barnabas House retail operation for over four years. Here, she tells us more about the hugely important role your donations play in providing hospice care.
“Over £500,000 profit was raised across 12 St Barnabas House shops last year”
This is thanks to your generous donations and includes £87,000 raised through Gift Aid alone. By supporting our hospice shops, you enable us to provide hospice care services to local people and their families.
“Volunteers are at the heart of our shops”
Over 349 volunteers help sort donated stock, serve customers, operate the till and arrange and display the many items for sale. There are also volunteers in the warehouse, helping to sort donated stock. Volunteering is a great way to gain retail experience, learn transferable skills and make new friends. We have a lot of fun and simply could not run our shops without them!
“Your donations help the environment”
We are all aware of the importance of recycling, reusing and reducing waste. Last year, your donations prevented 349 tonnes of clothes from ending up in landfill. We try and ensure that everything donated is either resold or recycled. Unsaleable items also have a value to us and by working with specialist recycling firms we gained an additional £144,000.
By shopping in a charity shop, you are doing a little bit for the planet as well as supporting vital hospice care in your local community.
“Good quality items at great prices”
Thanks to the generous donations from the local community there are some amazing items for sale at competitive prices. Shops change their stock every two weeks – that’s a lot of steaming! From our larger furniture shops to smaller ‘boutique’ style shops, there is something for everyone.
“We’ve received some surprising donations”
Some of strangest donations include a bag of carrots, a deep-sea diving costume and a child’s lunch box, complete with crusts and apple core, although I think that may have been a mistake made by a busy mum!
This year, we were also fortunate to be generously donated two vanloads of end of line ornaments and gifts with a total value of £10,000 to sell in our shops.
