From hospital to home – caring for patients during COVID-19

Monday 4 May 2020

The Hospice at Home team are extremely busy right now, visiting twice the number of people they would usually. Here’s just one of many moving examples of how they are continuing to deliver exceptional end of life care during the COVID-19 crisis.

Hospice at Home team COVID-19“Recently, we visited a very ill patient in hospital who wanted to die at home. He had a number of underlying conditions but also had COVID-19 and this combination caused numerous clinical risks, but as a team we were determined to care for him and make sure his wishes were met.

Fortunately, we were able to get him home and make him comfortable. Sadly, he died only hours later, but he was home where he and his family wanted him to be.

As a team, we continue to deliver care that is often in the last days and hours – it can be unrelenting and emotionally exhausting, but so rewarding at the same time.”

A huge thank you to the whole Hospice at Home team, including nurses from Chestnut Tree House who have come over from the local children’s hospice to help support St Barnabas services and have made an incredibly positive and important contribution. Their ‘can do ‘and ‘will do’ attitude is something to be acknowledged, respected and applauded and we definitely could not be delivering the care we are without everyone playing their part.
