Following the successful launch of the Dream Home Prize Draw last month, the organiser and home-owner, Peter Pearce, has decided to make an advance donation of £10,000 to his local hospices, St Barnabas House and Chestnut Tree House, to show his commitment to the charity.
The prize draw launched on Monday 20 July and is offering people the chance to win ‘Painter’s Keep’ – Peter’s four-bedroom house in West Sussex worth over £1 million. Tickets are priced at £2, and the winner could walk away with the mortgage-free property in a few weeks’ time, while 10% of the proceeds will be donated to St Barnabas House and Chestnut Tree House.
Inspired to support the charity after seeing our crisis appeal earlier this year, Peter wanted to do something to help, to ensure the hospices can continue to be there for local adults, children and families who need them. As well as both hospices being local to Peter, he has also experienced first-hand the work of St Barnabas House, after his father passed away at the hospice 12 years ago.
“St Barnabas is an important place to my mother, sister and I, and a cause very close to our hearts as they did such a wonderful job caring for my father at the end of his life,” explains Peter. “So many people I know have been helped by the hospice or know a friend or family member who has. We need to ensure they can continue to be here for everyone who needs them.
“I know how much the hospices rely on community support, but until I saw their crisis appeal, I hadn’t thought about the huge impact COVID-19 would have on their fundraising income. I’ve committed to donating 10% of the proceeds of the prize draw to St Barnabas and Chestnut Tree House, but I wanted to do something to help now as I know how hard the hospices are working to support children and adults throughout this difficult time. So, I’ve decided to make an early donation of £10,000, with the remaining amount to be finalised when the draw closes.”
Located near East Preston in West Sussex, ‘Painter’s Keep’ is on the private Kingston Gorse marine estate, where property prices range from £1m to £3m. Peter has owned the property for 20 years, and undertook an extensive 12-month refurbishment on the house in 2018. Peter sees this prize draw initiative as a way for him to move on while potentially changing someone’s life with a new home; and giving something back to his local hospices at the same time.
Providing a minimum of 750,000 tickets are sold, someone will win the house. If not, a draw will still take place with a cash prize.
Sarah Colbourne, Head of Fundraising at St Barnabas House and Chestnut Tree House said: “When the coronavirus crisis struck, our monthly fundraising income plummeted by 70% due to events being cancelled and the closure of our shops. Although constraints are easing and we have been overwhelmed by the support from our local community, we still need help to make up the shortfall so that we can continue providing vital hospice care, now and in the future.
“This £10,000 early donation will be a great help, and we’d like to thank everyone for their support.”
* Please note, the original closing date was 31 August but the prize draw has been extended by the organiser.
