Our Chief Executive and Executive Leadership Team (ELT) members support the Board of Trustees, leading the charity’s operations and overseeing the day to day running of both hospices – St Barnabas House and Chestnut Tree House. Heading up the various departments within the charity, the ELT meets regularly to review organisational performance, manage the implementation of strategy and agree policy.
Ben joined St Barnabas Hospices as CEO in May 2021. Previous to that he was CEO at DEBRA (supporting those affected by the genetic skin condition Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB)), and led the organisation for 12 years. He was profoundly moved by the suffering of the EB community and DEBRA was transformed from a small unknown charity that required restructuring, into a top 1,000 UK charity as turnover tripled. Ben has also worked in the commercial sector, his first CEO role was as CEO of Gladstone Plc, a software company.
Ben has previously been chair of the Charity Retail Association (CRA) which represents 11,000 UK Retail sites and 220,000 volunteers; was a Trustee, for 8 years, at a leading state school, and was on the Board of DEBRA International which is the affiliation of 50 Worldwide national DEBRA charities. He is currently chair of the Enham Trust, a disability charity based in Hampshire.
Ben lives with his wife Heidi, who is training for ordination, and has six children. He is a keen cyclist and kite surfer.
