Our Board of Trustees are all volunteers. They are responsible for the governance of the charity, overseeing and guiding the work of the Chief Executive and Senior Management Team.
Nicky Torricelli joined the Board of Trustees for St Barnabas Hospices in October 2019.
She is married with three children and her eldest daughter, Becca, was born with a genetic neuromuscular condition called Spinal Muscular Atrophy. This condition effects all of Becca’s muscles including her respiratory system, swallowing, and she has always been a fulltime wheelchair user. Becca requires care 24 hours a day and as such Nicky’s family, have been users of Chestnut Tree House since it opened in 2003. Nicky has come to a time in her life, now Becca is 20 and in full time education at Winchester University, and her other children are getting older, that she can dedicate more of her time to causes that are important to her.
She is passionate about the services Chestnut Tree House and St Barnabas House provide and is joining the Board now, after many years as her daughter’s carer and advocate, having built experience in the areas of health, social care, education and funding for families with disabilities to name a few.
Previously, Nicky worked as cabin crew for Virgin Atlantic when it was starting up and latterly as a senior recruitment advisor for the group.
She has also worked with other charities over the years as a contact volunteer for SMA UK (the charity for her daughter’s condition) and as an events volunteer for the Muscle Help Foundation.
Nicky and her family have supported both St Barnabas and Chestnut Tree House over many years by competing in and fundraising at various sponsored events such as; Operation: MUD, Night to Remember, Littlehampton 10k, Worthing High and Worthing College sponsored walks, Hit the Downs, and her daughter, Becca has been the main speaker at various fundraising events for Chestnut including the annual Snowman Spectacular Ball in 2018.
Nicky is very aware of the benefits the hospices Chestnut Tree House and St Barnabas House bring to people and families and being the only user of the service on the Board will give invaluable insight into the services provided by the charity.
