For our Christmas Appeal, Laura talks about how – thanks to the care provided by St Barnabas House – her dad Pete lived fully, laughed loudly, and loved deeply, right until the end.

Pete and daughter at home in use

My dad, Pete, was my best friend. I spoke to him every day and I miss him all the time. I think about him more and more the closer Christmas gets – it was his favourite time of year.

There’s a big hole in our family without him but we’re grateful we’ve got a lifetime of memories to fill it with – and many of those are because of St Barnabas House.

could provide a whole day of hospice care at home, so dads like Pete can be surrounded by the comforts and people they love.
could fund a nurse on the hospice ward for a full day, as they offer comfort, ease pain and help people live life to the full, right to the end.
could pay for a patient to spend 24 hours at the hospice, giving families a well-earned break knowing that their loved one is cared for.
Pete and his daughter in the hospice

When Dad was diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer before he was even 70, it hit me hard. I always thought Dad would live to be an old man, that he would be there to watch my kids grow up and achieve their dreams of becoming a forensic scientist and a teacher. I thought he would be there for years to come, to pick up the phone or give me a hug when I needed him. Hearing that there was nothing doctors could do for him was like having the rug pulled out from underneath me.

Christmas is such a difficult time to be dealing with the worst news – that you, or a loved one, don’t have much time left. But at St Barnabas, even the toughest of times can be full of laughter and love.

Today, I hope you can give the best Christmas gift – the chance for someone like Dad to make their Christmas whatever they want it to be. Whether that’s a day of quiet, or a crowded room full of family, unwrapping presents and laughter.

Will you help another family spend precious time together?
