There’s so many ways you can get involved and support St Barnabas House.

Volunteer Drivers

Our volunteer drivers help patients and families without their own transport get to and from the hospice.

Due to COVID 19 many of our volunteering roles were suspended, however we are now carefully reintegrating volunteers back into key roles onsite and in our retail shops. Please read our latest updates here.


Why we want you:

Our drivers provide vital transport, using their own vehicles for patients, families, carers and the bereaved.

We need friendly faces that can assist their passengers and provide safe, comfortable driving.

The role will involve:

Being part of a team presenting the face of St Barnabas House.

Using your vehicle, to collect recently bereaved persons from their homes and bringing them to the hospice in order for them to attend our Family Services Social Evenings (Fuel expenses are reimbursed.)

You will bring individuals to the hospice for 7:30pm and collect them again at 9:30pm.

Your Skills:

  • Excellent communication and listening skills
  • Ability to empathise with the client
  • Reliable and good time-keeping
  • To be able to map read and follow location instructions
  • To be comfortable with potentially driving in the dark
  • Insight into issues relating to death, dying and bereavement and an understanding of the importance of confidentiality and boundaries
  • Ability to be non-judgmental and accept people as individuals and respect their differences


  • You will also need to have been approved by the Disclosure and Barring Service, including a check against the adults’ barred checklist due to the nature of the role.
  • Understand the importance of confidentiality.
  • Have a suitable vehicle for passenger transport.
  • To provide valid and current car and driving documentation
  • Attend in-house driving assessment & mini-bus training (if applicable)
  • Any personal grief resolved.
