Who are Southern Hospice Group?

Last year we announced that St Barnabas House and our sister hospice Chestnut Tree House would be merging with Martlets in Hove to create one single hospice group. To allow us to complete some legal and administrative functions, we’ve needed to identify a new name for the group: Southern Hospice Group.

Together, we support children, young people and adults who have life-limiting conditions which will significantly shorten their lives. We help those we care for, and their loved ones, to make the most of the precious time they have left together. Our expert palliative services support local communities across Sussex and South East Hampshire – at our hospice sites and in people’s homes.

Why has Southern Hospice Group been created?

Southern Hospice Group was formed in 2024 when all three hospices merged. By combining the strengths and expertise of three hospices, the organisations hope to improve access to specialist palliative and end of life care, achieve greater efficiency, and ultimately benefit patients, families, staff and the wider communities. Our reasons for merging are:

  • Outstanding patient care: We bring together a wealth of specialist clinical experience, talent and resources to enhance the level of care provided to our patients, and to provide consistency of care across the catchment areas.
  • Community impact: We’re committed to maintaining an active role in the community and contributing to its well-being. We aim to be a trusted partner in supporting individuals and families during their most challenging times.
  • Improved sustainability: The integration of resources and streamlined processes will improve operational and financial efficiency, allowing us to allocate more resources to patient care.

We’d like to reassure you that we are still here as St Barnabas House, continuing to provide the high standards of care our communities expect, and this change will not impact where your generous support will be directed.

Your donations will continue to be used to support St Barnabas House and the work we do in Worthing and the surrounding areas for patients, families and friends living with a life-limiting condition. St Barnabas House will absolutely continue to retain its own name and identity.

From January 2025, when you donate to St Barnabas House, the name you will see on your bank statement will no longer be St Barnabas Hospices (Sussex) Limited and will instead be Southern Hospice Group.

This change will not impact where your generous support will be directed. Your donations will continue to be used to support St Barnabas House.

No. Legacy giving will not be affected by the merger, or creation of Southern Hospice Group. You do not need to make any changes to your Will.

The three hospices will continue to operate under their existing names – St Barnabas House, Martlets, Chestnut Tree House, with their current branding

This means that if you’ve signed up to emails from St Barnabas House, you won’t receive emails from Martlets or Chestnut Tree House, unless you’ve also signed up separately to them.

Martlets Care will continue to operate as a separate entity (a subsidiary of the group) and will be overseen by the Group Leadership team.
