Worthing electronics manufacturer takes on marathon trek

South Downs Trek is a marathon or half marathon-length walk raising vital funds for local hospice care.

It is a meaningful challenge for individuals and groups alike. Participants will include teams from several local businesses, including FermionX – a leading electronic contract manufacturer with 50 years’ experience, based in Worthing. The company offers contract electronics manufacturing services within a variety of industries, from a critical tool within the medical and laboratory industry, to a display unit in a military helicopter. The team from FermionX will be raising funds for St Barnabas House in Worthing, which also celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

Marketing assistant Kaltrina Khan says “A colleague suggested taking part as a team after enjoying her own experience doing South Downs Trek last year.

“We wanted to challenge ourselves as most of us have never hiked such a long distance,” she continues. “We are not only raising funds for a great cause but also pushing ourselves to achieve a personal goal.”

The team of six is training for their 26.2-mile challenge by walking in the South Downs, gradually increasing the distance every few weeks. “This will help build our stamina and endurance, so we won’t be completely exhausted by the end of the trek,” says Kaltrina. “All this walking has made us realise that we need better shoes for the real trek, so some of us are currently breaking in our new hiking shoes.

“Some of us are trying to incorporate more walking into our daily routines, such as walking to work instead of driving. Even if it’s an hour or two within a busy day, we make time for it. We’re also working on our mental resilience, reminding ourselves that we can do it.”

Could you walk alongside the FermionX team and other hikers for a day of fun, challenging walking? South Downs Trek is on Sunday 30 September, starting from Northbrook College.
