Our care

Accessing our care

If you’d like to be supported by St Barnabas House, the first thing to do is speak to your GP, consultant or other healthcare professional. They will then be able to refer you to our services.

How do I get referred?

We can only accept referrals from healthcare professionals, such as a GP or consultant. They will always discuss referrals with you before they get in touch with us about you accessing care at the hospice.

Who gets hospice care?

Our aim is to help support you through your life-limiting illness and help you live a better quality of life for longer. We offer lots of different services, from advice and support on how to best manage your symptoms, to emotional support. Help is offered for you and your loved ones as you face your diagnosis together.

There are two main reasons people need to access hospice care services:

  • Symptom control: If you have persistent, difficult symptoms that you need help with outside of your home or a hospital setting.
  • End of life care: We’re here to help you manage your illness towards the final part of your life.

Our services are available to any adult who lives in our catchment area (Worthing, Lancing, Shoreham, Littlehampton, Henfield, Steyning, Partridge Green and Storrington).

What happens once I’m referred?

We aim to get in touch with everyone referred to us within ten working days, and if you urgently need our care, we’ll do all we can to see you within two days.

A member of the team will contact you and offer you an appointment either at the hospice, online or at home. We’ll get to know how you’re feeling and how your illness is affecting you and your family. Together we’ll decide on what would be most helpful for you and put together a plan.

Refer yourself to Living Well

Living Well is a programme of different activities for anyone in our catchment area with a life-limiting illness. Whether it’s developing a new love of gardening through the Full Bloom group, learning techniques to manage breathlessness, or supporting patients to create a story in the Creative Writing group, Living Well provides a safe space for this to happen alongside others with similar challenges within their lives.
