Garden classes in full bloom

As spring arrives, the spacious ‘wellbeing’ room at St Barnabas House is flooded with warm sunlight, creating the perfect setting for patients to engage in seasonal garden activities such as potting plants and making bird feeders.

Both Pamela and Claire have life-limiting conditions and are receiving support from St Barnabas, including the Full Bloom classes – a six-week course in spring gardening that is part of the hospice’s Living Well service.

Claire looks forward to the sessions each week and told us that she has made some friends too: “I’ve met several people through the classes, some people like to discuss what their illnesses are and other people don’t. We meet up for a coffee in the café. “

She also finds some respite in the classes adding: “It makes me forget. I get engrossed in what I’m doing, and it’s a nice couple of hours of something fun and easy.”

The courses run throughout the year and are open to anyone living in the St Barnabas catchment area that has a life-limiting illness or those with frailty. Anyone wanting to attend can self-refer via the hospice’s website or by telephone.

Pamela has been attending the courses for several months and she encourages others to sign up, saying: “I love the classes. You make friends, and I really look forward to coming on a Tuesday.”

She also praised the staff at the hospice, adding: “They are so supportive without being intrusive. They’re always there when you want them, but when you want a few minutes on your own, they sense it. Everybody’s smiling from the time you walk through the door, everybody’s just so lovely.”

The Living Well service at St Barnabas House exists to support those that have a life-limiting illness to live well every day. A life-limiting diagnosis can be difficult and overwhelming, but the courses allow individuals to enjoy activities and socialise whilst in a safe and supportive environment.

Lisa Palmer, a Therapy Technician at St Barnabas House runs the classes and highlights how important they are: “The courses are a joy to run – the room is often filled with laughter and it’s wonderful to see people relax and feel like they can release their emotions and discuss their health if they wish to. For some, it’s the only time they socialise. We’re always looking to welcome new faces – so please do look at the criteria and self-refer.”
